We will mix cob by foot and by machine\, explore a variety of cob recipes and their compression test results\, and build a part of a cob wall using a forming system. \nThe co-instructor for this course\, Stephen Hren\, has completed two permitted cob projects in North Carolina – in two different counties – and will share his experience with his most recent project\, which was finished in 2023. Stephen will give a slideshow presentation after lunch to discuss his process and answer questions. SUMMARY:3-Day Natural Plasters + Paints Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mud Dauber School of Natural Building for a course offering hands-on experience mixing and applying a variety of natural finishes. \nPlasters and paints are important functionally and aesthetically. They protect your natural wall system from the elements\, and also provide an opportunity to add color\, texture\, and beauty. Plastering can be quite a satisfying experience\, both in regards to how it looks\, and how it feels to apply. Our students often refer to it as the “icing on the cake!” \nOur emphasis will be on clay plaster (base and finish coat\, as well as sculpting + relief work). We’ll also be making and applying clay paint\, milk paint\, and limewash. Additionally\, there will be a demo of lime plaster\, plus an opportunity to try applying them. We will be working on-site on our demonstration cottages\, as well as experimenting on individual sample boards. \nIn addition to our scheduled learning time\, there is a wonderful community aspect to our workshops. Three wholesome meals are provided each day\, which are shared as a group in our community gathering space. As the company grew\, we came to focus on Backyard Cottages and Accessory Dwelling Units\, both factory-built modular as well as traditional site-built construction. Kurt’s focus is on business development and market analysis to guide the company’s direction. \nAmanda Wolfe \nAmanda comes from an extensive background in sales and design. She started in the building industry by creating custom lighting packages for luxury residential homes\, as well as representing one of the world’s top quartz countertop manufacturers as a brand manager. While there she worked with hundreds of interior designers\, architects\, builders and big box stores throughout the PNW. Amanda held a lifelong a passion for creating more affordable housing options\, and took the jump into tiny home sales and design in 2020 and became a part of the Carriage Houses NW team in 2022 as our head of sales and customer experience.
