Bend’s first tiny house subdivision, The Hiatus, is now open.

Each house is being sold for $249,000, though far under the $400,000 median price of a local single-family home, it is more the developer, Jesse Russell, hoped to charge. He blames the system development charges, which are the same regardless of the size of the house.

The fees, which help pay for city infrastructure, represent almost 10 percent of the cost of a house in The Hiatus, said Jesse Russell.
